Burleigh Travel, in conjunction with Bognor Rugby Club, hosted the Bognor Junior Rugby Festival on Sunday 10th April in glorious conditions. This enabled all age groups to play some wonderful, free flowing, running rugby and everyone commented on how much they enjoyed this fantastic youth rugby festival with a number vowing to return to this junior rugby festival in 2012!

The Under 13 age group had the largest number of teams and was also the most competitive with all teams contributing to ensure some brilliant rugby with some fantastc tries being scored. Cranbrook RFC and Lutterworth RFC ensured all the games stayed competitive and Cranbrook just managed to beat Lutterworth in their final game to secure 3rd place having conceded less tries than their opponents. This left New Milton RFC and Bedford Junior Blues to contest the final game of a wonderful rugby festival with Bedford knowing that a win with one try more than their opponents would secure the victory on tries scored. In a pulsating encounter both teams went out to secure the victory however both defences should be commended on their stunning performances. Bedford scored the try they needed with 5 minutes to go and managed to hold on despite incessant pressure from New Milton to win 7-0 thus securing the U13 crown.

In the Under 14 section of this junior rugby festival it became apparent early on that Hitchin and Ruislip were the two stand out teams securing comfortable wins in their early pool matches and they would go on to contest the final. In the plate final Bognor RFC came out on top in a competitive game against Stockwood Park RFC 10-0 despite having lost to the same team earlier in the tournament! This left Hitchin and Ruislip to battle it out for the Under 14 title. In an absorbing first half it remained fairly tight with Hitchin scoring a couple of tries to edge ahead. However in the 2nd half it appeared Ruislip ran out of steam a little meaning that Hitchin emerged with a 31-0 victory ensuring they were crowned deserved winners of the U14 group.

The U15 event was an exhibition in rugby playing ability from all teams however one in particular, Lutterworth RFC from Leicestershire, shone as the stand out team at this age group. While they enjoyed a very good day eventually triumphing against a spirited Wimborne side in the final it was the plate final which really captured everyone’s attention! With Old Salts RFC and Bognor RFC both being evenly matched a close game was anticipated and nobody at the junior rugby festival was disappointed. In a wonderful encounter played in fantastic spirit Old Salts scored the clinching try in the dying minutes to eventually triumph 17-7!

Burleigh Travel would like to congratulate all teams who participated on the spirit the rugby festival was played in and also the quality of rugby played. Everyone who attended commented on the wonderful time they had at the Bognor Junior Rugby Festival with them advising they would be attending one of our junior rugby festivals in 2012.

Bognor Rugby Club in conjunction with Burleigh Travel hosted the Bognor RFC Mini Rugby Festival on Saturday 9th April. Over 30 teams participated in this mini rugby festival on a gloriously sunny day and some brilliant, competitive rugby was played at all age groups throughout the day.

At the U7 & U8 age groups some fantastic tag rugby was played throughout the day and both groups were highly competitive with all teams managing to beat one another to ensure tense final matches! In the U7 age group it was Shoreham RFC that just emerged victorious ahead of Rochford Hundred RFC in a very tight and tense final. In the U8 section Bognor fielded two sides who contested the final with the Bognor Bulls emerging victorious. In the plate final at U8 Pinner RFC won in a fantastic match against Shoreham RFC which ebbed and flowed throughout!

In the U9 age group there was some very solid tackling and defence on show with some brilliant flair required to break down organised defences! After a brilliant competition Brighton RFC showed their quality by finishing at the top and winning their age group with Shoreham RFC a very close second having just been beaten by one try in the crunch match against Brighton. The U10 age group had the highest number of teams in the mini rugby festival however this did not diminish the quality on display. The crowd witnessed some fantastic rugby all day long with the surface condusive to running rugby. The final was between Northampton Old Scouts and Kenilworth where the class of the Old Scouts came to the fore and they emerged victorious. In the plate the hosts Bognor had a victory beating Northampton Old Scouts 2nd team in the final.

The U11 age group in the Bognor Mini Rugby Festival was high on determination and again some fantastic defensive skills were on display. This was epitomised by Northampton Old Scouts who refused to let anyone past all day and emerged victorious ahead of a spirited Cranbrook RFC team. For a while it appeared that Northampton Old Scouts would get it all their own way in the older age groups with their U12 side starting strongly however the team from Lutterworth RFC eventually emerged as the victorious side with the Old Scouts having to settle for 2nd.

Burleigh Travel would like to congratulate all the teams who competed in the Bognor Mini Rugby Festival on their achievements and everyone commented on the very high level of rugby played on such a fantastically sunny day!

Liverpool University Cricket Club have recently returned from their highly enjoyable and successful cricket tour to Australia. This cricket tour was a 19 day 4 fixture tour based in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne where they even managed to watch England retain The Ashes! Burleigh Travel would like to offer their congratulations to the team on their performances on the field and clearly their fantastic support at The MCG which no doubt helped the England Cricket team in winning the test match!

The cricketers departed London on 12th December with a stop over en route in Singapore enabling them to have enough time to explore some of the wonderful experiences on offer in this vibrant destination such as the fantastic night safari or the vibrant Clarke Quay area.

After their overnight stop the team continued on to Brisbane to begin their cricket tour. The weather in Brisbane was not the best as has been shown in the news however there was enough of a break in the rain to ensure the Liverpool University boys managed to get some cricket in during their time in this fantastic city. The game was against Beenleigh Logan Cutters CC who provided a stern test for the first game.

With England 1-0 up in The Ashes at this point the local side saw this as their opportunity for some sort of revenge and, batting first they totalled a respectable 157-6 off their 20 overs. Liverpool University’s bowlers did pretty well considering the vastly different conditions in 98% humidity! The batsmen, however, found that their time in the field did little to help their batting and some excellent bowling from Beenleigh ensured a comfortable victory for the home side. Afterwards there was some fantastic banter in the clubhouse with the Aussie side showing some brilliant hospitality.

This ensured that, unfortunately, the first part of their cricket tour to Australia began unsuccessfully for the team however, after a few days in Brisbane, the team hoped for a change in fortunes when they travelled to Sydney to continue their cricket tour and played the famous SCG XI. The SCG XI are due to play the MCC in a game later in the Australian summer so the Liverpool University side saw this as a wonderful opportunity to show how good all English sides are!

Captain George Thomas won the toss and decided to bat first however the top order struggled to begin with and were 38-3 after the first 10 overs. The middle order, however, really came to life at this point and some big hitting later in the innings meant that they finished on a very respectable 132-8 from their 22 overs. The bowlers then had their chance and a steady fall of wickets, including one sensational catch, meant that SCG XI needed 37 off 5 overs and 11 from the final over which proved beyond them as Liverpool University CC secured their first win on their cricket tour in Sydney by a dramatic 5 runs! A fantastic performance by the whole team which was rounded off by some fantastic hospitality in a nearby hotel. The team then spent Christmas in Sydney enjoying some of the wonderful scenery on offer including the infamous Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

For the final leg of their cricket tour to Australia the Liverpool University CC XI travelled to Melbourne to enjoy the wonderful environment of the MCG and the Boxing Day Test Match between Australia and England. The boys enjoyed their time being part of the ‘Barmy Army’ and made their voices heard cheering England to a huge victory to ensure they retained The Ashes. Once the game finished the Liverpool boys managed to pass their flag to Matthew Prior to assist in the celebrations and this was waved by the England wicketkeeper all around the ground. I am sure all of the boys would agree this was a fantastic end to a wonderful cricket tour to Australia!

The Liverpool University CC team all throughly enjoyed their trip to Australia and if you would like to enjoy an amazing cricket tour to Australia with the possibility of including Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney or Cairns please do not hesitate to contact us.

On Wednesday 27th October Pate’s were invited to Kinsale RFC where they were able to enjoy a training session in the morning to ensure their legs were stretched out following the coach journey the day previously. This was a fantastic way for the boys to start their rugby tour enabling some fine tuning of moves in anticipation of the games in the afternoon. In wet and windy conditions both sides had exciting matches at Kinsale Rugby Club with the wind proving a key factor.

The U13 side had the wind at their backs in the first half and took advantage building up a healthy advantage by half time which proved just enough despite a fierce comeback from the hosts with Pate’s running out winners 36-20. The U14 side had a similar game building up a significant lead before having to withstand a fightback eventually running out winners 36-10.

On Thursday the boys enjoyed trips to the Jameson Experience and also to Blarney Castle where they kissed the infamous Blarney Stone hoping it would bring them good luck for their evening games against Kanturk Rugby Club. This clearly proved to be the case as both teams ran out fairly comfortable winners after producing wonderful attacking displays of rugby however Kanturk should be congratulated for their never say die attitude and competitive spirit!

All the boys should be congratulated on their highly successful rugby tour to Cork and received praise from everyone especially the lead coach from Kinsale Rugby Club who advised “they had a fantastic time with Pate’s, the boys were impeccable and the teachers should be very proud of them!”
