THURSDAY 31ST JULY 2003

So that the group
could have the opportunity to experience more of Sydney's most popular
attractions, we arranged for them to spend the morning at the picturesque
Manly.

Once a mornings free time had been spent predominantly on the beach
where the pupils gave the staff a lesson in touch rugby, (!!) the
group caught a ferry to Circular Key to allow them to experience Sydney
from the water and take another look at the breathtaking views of
the Sydney skyline. Once at circular key, they had a short time to
wonder around the Rocks area, Sydney's birthplace before their coach
met them and returned to their respective host schools for their first
taste of Australian Sport.

Both schools enjoyed an evenly
played match with the visitors coming through to win with a good second
half performance when they appeared to have realised they were actually
playing in Australia and began to look and play like a team. |

School 2 Chew Valley
Scorer – Becky Veater
The hockey team encountered a narrow defeat during their first
fixture but displayed an all round spirited performance against
good opposition. If a few chances had been taken the final score
may have been different.

them for the following 3 nights.
The usual post match presentations took place and the Chew Valley

FRIDAY 1ST AUGUST
2003
Light training sessions were held this morning at the respective host
schools to brush up on some of the problem areas from the first fixtures. |

Once the teachers had put the
players through their paces, each group was collected by coach and
transferred to the Olympic Park where the group enjoyed a full guided
tour of the Telstra Stadium before moving on to the Aquatic centre
where they had an opportunity to swim in the Olympic pool before enjoying
a poolside lunch.

SATURDAY 2ND AUGUST
2003
This day saw the Chew Valley teams say good bye to their hosts before
traveling to enjoy their second taste of Australian Sport with their
second round of fixtures in the Sydney area. The rugby team was
to visit one of Australia's top rugby schools, commonly known as
‘Joey's', where a good all round performance saw them take
a narrow victory from their hosts.

Anyone who has ever visited
St Josephs College, Hunters Hill on a rugby day will know the rugby
treat that you are in store for. Matches take place through out the
day with the culmination being the first team fixture at the end of
the day, which the Chew Valley players stayed to watch, where a crowd
of almost 4,000 enjoyed a superb rugby fixture. A traditional ‘Ausie
BBQ' is also available throughout the day to top off the event. |

The girls enjoyed
their first win on Australian soil with a strong performance. Two
goals from Alana Wilson, (left) helped the team on the way to a fine
victory which would hopefully stand them in good stead for the remainder
of their fixtures. This victory was even more impressive when it is
considered that the majority of the players had not played on Astro
Turf before this fixture. |
