Rob travelled over the Severn Bridge in 1996 to complete his studies for a Sport and Exercise Science and Tourism Management Degree at what was Cheltenham & Gloucester College Of Higher Education. Some time since, Rob could not have expected to have made his home in the Cotswolds and to be enjoying family life having travelled the world combining his love of sport and travel and also making good use of his University Degree.
Home was a small farm in northern Pembrokeshire, West Wales where life on the farm is sure to have set Rob in good stead for his later successes on the rugby field. Rob played football, rugby and cricket for school and local clubs and while social cricket filled summer weekends, he soon had to choose between football and rugby as playing both in one day began to leave its mark! Rugby was the obvious choice and after a few positional changes from scrum half to hooker, Rob went on to play at the highest levels of the game as a school boy after having captained his school, represented County, District and West Wales at all Junior age levels.
Sport also played a large part in his university life culminating in Rob captaining the rugby club in his final year and organising a rugby tour to South Africa for a 40 strong party; a perfect way to end 3 years as a first team player. During this period, Rob played a memorable season for Cheltenham RFC Colts winning the County Cup and enjoying a fixture card that included trips to many top flight clubs such as Bath, Cardiff and Leicester; as well as 3 wins over local rivals Gloucester.
Soon after leaving University Rob joined Burleigh Travel in the year 2000 as fixture co-ordinator and soon became an established member of the team gaining experience in arranging sports tours all over the world where he was part of many company firsts and taking an integral role in the company's growth. As growth continued and a managerial position became necessary, this was a logical progression for Rob and is a role he very much enjoys today.
Rob looks forward to using his experience to help make your next tour memorable for your sports team. You are likely to meet Rob at one of our hospitality events or Mini & junior Rugby Festivals and if you follow us on Twitter, there's a chance it's Rob doing the Tweeting!
Favourite Sports Tour Destination
"This is a close call for me between Australia and South Africa. South Africa offers so much; beach, city break and wilderness experiences all in one tour and this combined with its sport obsession does make it hard to beat and having visited the country several times, it is somewhere I like very much, but.... Australia as a sports tour destination is hard to beat.
Be it the tranquility of a day cycling around Rottnest island off the coast of Perth, the captivating Sounds Of Silence Dinner under the stars at Ayres Rock, a helicopter flight over the Great Barrier Reef, climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge or simply experiencing the sport obsessed culture and extraordinalry sports facilities available. I challenge anyone not to have an unforgettable time on a sports tour to Australia."
Most Memorable Sports Tour Experience
"As a player, getting off the plane in South Africa after a long hard year as tour organiser for my university rugby team tour. We had a brilliant time, hard rugby, hard partying and amazing memories with a good bunch of boys who between drinks managed to play to a high level. Visiting a township for one of our games will stay with me forever.
As a tour organiser / leader at Burleigh Travel, touring to Australia; somewhere I thought I would never travel to when I was growing up. Swimming in the Great Barrier Reef and climbing the Harbour Bridge in Sydney were unforgettable experiences"
