Darton High School U14’s Rugby Team

This tour was a major achievement for such a young age group and indeed they were the first U/14’s rugby side to visit the island. The Darton School boys from Barnsley under the guidance of teacher Mr Parkin fund raised throughout the year under the slogan “From Barnsley to Barbados” and the group were a credit to their school.

They opted for a 9-day tour based on the West coast of this friendly Island. They stayed in apartments on a complex with a pool, restaurant, bar, supermarket and evening entertainment which, combined with the laid-back Bajan lifestyle, the tropical sun and the golden beaches, made for a tour which will not be forgotten by the participants.

The group played 2 games against Barbados Select XV teams during their tour, winning both in closely fought games.  The rugby ground on the island is located in the middle of the Garrison Savannah Racetrack, and there is always the chance that you will be playing a game of rugby with horses pounding the turf all around!  The Bajan’s provided excellent hospitality and a friendly welcome for the school team.

As well as their rugby games, Darton High School also enjoyed visits to Oistins, a small fishing village with a big reputation for evening food and entertainment, as well as an island tour and visit to ‘The Boatyard’ an all inclusive beach club with kayaking, snorkelling, water trampolines and a DJ playing tunes all day. 

Their final day trip was an all day Catamaran cruise around the island – this is a must-do on a trip to Barbados, and the boys from Darton High School were able to snorkel and swim with turtles, as well as enjoying soaking up the rays on the catamaran’s deck and making the most of the food and drink on offer during the day.
