PENRYN RFC U16 RUGBY TOUR TO SOUTH AFRICA
The group enjoyed a three-centre tour using Durban, Mkuse and Cape Town as their bases. Each venue offered a variety of pastimes, in addition to a high standard of rugby.
Durban boasts an effervescent ocean lined with miles of golden sand and a multitude of recreational options. The Golden Mile in Durban offers a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as a water park and aquarium to keep everyone amused. Mkuze Game Reserve is located around 3 hours north of Durban, and offers the chance to see South African wildlife in its native habitat, as well as learn about the culture of the Zulu people native to the area. Whilst here, the group took part in a boat cruise on Lake Jozini as well as a half day game drive to search for the elusive ‘Big Five’.
Cape Town, with its majestic Table Mountain backdrop, maintains its reputation for friendly hospitality and is one of the most beautiful cities in the World. A cable car trip up Table Mountain is a must, whilst visits to the lively entertainment centre of the restored Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, are also popular.
During their rugby tour, the group were lucky enough to watch local heroes Natal Sharks take victory in an evening game at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. They also visited the newly opened uShaka Marine World, a combination of Aquarium and Water Park, as well as the Dumazulu Cultural Village which gave them an insight into the local Zulu culture. In Cape Town, they visited Robben Island, where they learnt firsthand from a former inmate, what life was like for prisoners on the island.
Penryn RFC U16 played 4 games against local opposition during their tour, coming out on top in 2 of the games. They enjoyed an excellent and friendly welcome wherever they went, with particular praise to Harlequins in Durban, and Excelsior High School in Cape Town who went out of their way to make the team feel welcome.
