Colts Rugby Tour to South Africa
During their colts rugby tour to South Africa, the players of Datchworth RFC U18’s spent 7 days in Durban, 4 days in the Mkuze Game Reserve of Northern Natal and 10 days in Cape Town to really experience all South Africa has to offer.
Their rugby tour started in Durban where the unforgettable experiences were not delayed as the tour started with the Ocean Safari Boat Tour cruising the Indian Ocean along Durban’s impressive Golden Mile searching for whales, sharks and other marine life. A visit to the popular Ushaka Marine world and two rugby matches completed the itinerary for the Durban leg of the rugby tour before the group travelled north to enjoy their game experience; South Africa’s most popular tourist attraction.
During their four days in the Mkuze Game Reserve, the group stayed at the popular Ghost Mountain Safari Lodge. En route to the lodge, the group visited Dumazulu Village to experience traditional Zulu life and enjoyed entertainment and lunch ‘Zulu style’, giving an interesting insight into the culture of the natives of the Natal province. The following day, the group began their game experience and tried to track down the elusive ‘big five’ of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The day began with a boat cruise on Lake Jozini giving sightings of hippo, crocodile and a range of bird life and was followed with a game drive in 4×4 vehicles in the late afternoon. The second day at the reserve saw the group enjoy a day long safari through the reserve; an excellent way to see the local inhabitants in their daily routines. The day was rounded off with a show of traditional Zulu Dancing at the Lodge prior to dinner.
The group then travelled on to Cape Town where they were looking forward to a rugby training clinic with former Gloucester, Leicester and London Irish Back Row Jake Boer. This day not only gave them the opportunity to train with the former professional, but also to travel to the Villagers RFC where Jake started his career. The day started at the Newlands Forest with a 2 hour fitness and fun session before the group were transferred to the Villagers club for lunch and the afternoon rugby training clinic, where the team were taught valuable skills which they no doubt have brought onto the field back home. After the clinic was complete they all enjoyed a traditional Spit Braai before going back to their accommodation.
Whilst in Cape Town the group played three local matches as well as enjoying a day on Table Mountain for abseiling and mountain biking as well as a day in the desert for sand boarding and quad biking. After 10 days in Cape Town soaking in the culture and atmosphere the Western Cape is famous for, the team then travelled to the airport for their return overnight direct flight to London.
