Heriot Watt University rugby team embarked on an epic 12 day to South Africa, which involved three different destinations, a safari, three rugby matches and a coaching session in a local township.
The team arrived into Durban on the Friday and had the chance to settle in before dinner. The following day they spent the day at uShaka Marine World. After this the team went to watch the Sharks vs the Stormers in a South African Super Rugby derby!
Sunday they had free to enjoy the local beaches and get some light training in before their first tour match. Their first match of tour saw them face Amanzimtoti RFC. After a greatly contested game the host team snatched a close 12-0 victory. After the game they enjoyed a BBQ and some drinks with their hosts.
On Tuesday they made their way to Ghost Mountain where they would stay for two nights. On arrival the team had the chance to explore the grounds and take a dip in the pool. The following day after breakfast the team set off for Lake Jozini where they had a Boat Cruise. After lunch the team set off on the Mkhuze Game Drive Safari where they saw a number of animals including elephants.
Thursday marked the final leg of their tour as they made their way to Cape Town. Friday was a busy day taking in some of the sites, and started with a visit to Robben Island in the morning for a tour, followed by the Springbok Experience Museum, a must for any rugby enthusiast! After this they travelled to Table Mountain to go up in the Aerial Cableway.
On Saturday they had their second fixture against Villager RFC, where they secured a solid win. The afternoon was spent socialising with the opposition. Sunday was for more sightseeing and the players embarked on the Cape Peninsular tour, which includes Cape Point the south-western tip of the Peninsular, a nature reserve, Hout Bay, False Bay, Simon’s Town, Boulder’s Beach (which is home to a penguin reserve), Fish Hoek and Muizenberg.
Monday was a busy day of rugby. The team made their way to Macassar, where they ran a coaching session at the Helderberg Academy. After this session they set off for their last tour game against False Bay RFC. This was their toughest match on tour and they were beaten by a strong False Bay side. But after the game the two sides enjoyed a great evening together and were joined by Scottish International Huw Jones, who had watched the game and joined in the post match celebrations.
