LEICESTER GRAMMAR SCHOOL U18 TOUR TO AUSTRALIA 2002

During their tour to Australia, the group enjoyed staying in Sydney, Perth and Cairns as their bases.

LGS Teachers Olympic Park Sydney

Vibrant and cosmopolitan Sydney was their first base and offered the opportunity to visit Homebush, the Olympic Stadium for a guided tour as well as spending time in the world famous Darling Harbour, famed for its bridge and Opera House. Perth, their second base, is blessed with sparkling beaches and a sunny climate and a favourite visit for tourists is to Rottnest Island.  Finally, a trip to Cairns with its magnificent backdrop of mountains covered with lush tropical rainforests, allowed the group to visit the Great Barrier Reef – surely the trip of a lifetime!

During their tour the group played several sports fixtures; a total of 14 across the 3 sports, netball, hockey and rugby, which travelled on the tour to Australia.

The rugby boys enjoyed an unbeaten record in Australia, which not many teams, including international sides, can boost.  They also enjoyed spending time with their hosts after the games and during billeted stays with local schools in Sydney and Perth. Their first hosts in Sydney included an after match function and ‘sausage sizzle’ for the boys, whilst hosts in Perth provided a traditional Aussie Barbeque.

A highlight for many in the group was the full day catamaran cruise to the Great Barrier Reef, the stunning natural phenomenon off the coast of Cairns.  Qualified guides and marine biologists made sure that the group were fitted out with snorkels to make the most of their time at the reef, and answered the many questions sure to arise.  The submarine viewers were also available to the group, as well as a barbeque buffet lunch on board.

The groups final day in Australia was spent white water rafting on the Tully River, famed for its world-class rapids.  It is one of the few white water rivers which is operational all year round, as it is dam-controlled – this meant there was no disappointment for the group in the adrenaline stakes!
